At the
same time it also becomes difficult to
cater to the needs of all the students, since the
expectations of the students are different and
meeting requirement of one category of student
fails to address the needs of the other class of
students and vice versa.
The
Indian Government and the University Grants
Commission, New Delhi and University of Pune were
very seriously thinking to resolve such a
situation. Finally in the Tenth Plan it was
decided to award Autonomy to the 10% of the top
institutes in the country. It is also seen that
the top institutes in the world and in the
country are autonomous Institutes like the IITs and
NITs etc.
Vishwakarma Institute of Technology Pune, was
working in this direction since last five years and were geared up to become
autonomous to deliver quality Engineering Education to its Students. Various
committees visited the institute and after rigorous quality checks at very step,
University Grants Commission and the University of Pune conferred autonomous status to the
institute in February 2008.
Autonomy
has allowed the institute to impart quality
engineering education to the students in the
best possible manner. The major changes done by
the institute under Autonomy are as
follows
1• The Curriculum has been designed with the help of the
industry, to meet the demands of the latest trends in the industry.
2• The academic calendar is well defined and
there is scope for all types of activities including Curricular,
Co-Curricular, and Extra Curricular. The students have also been provided with
refreshing summer and winter breaks which will also help them to study
additional courses and undergo industrial training and projects.
3• The Examination
is based on Continuous assessment which includes Class Tests, Mid Semester
Test, End Semester Test and Assessment by Teacher. The Assessment
and revaluation Process is completely transparent and the students can see
their answer books and receive suggestions (if any) by the respective subject
teachers.
4• Credit and Relative Grading systems is
internationally compatible and it shifts the focus from exam oriented
studies to learning.
5• The institute now declares its own results on behalf
of the university and after successful completion of the program the
university awards the degree on the recommendation of the Institute.
The highlights of the Curriculum
designed by the institute are
1• Interdisciplinary approach by way of interdisciplinary
subjects, Electives and Projects
2• Track Module helps the students to choose a mini
specialization in his Branch
3•
Flexibility to choose subjects by the way of
disciplinary, inter-disciplinary Professional Development, General
Proficiency subjects and Open Electrives.
4• Professional Development Subjects in Second and third
year bridges the gap between industry and institutes. What makes the subjects more attractive is
that some of the courses are directly offered by the industry.
5• General Proficiency Subjects helps improve the overall
personality of the student and helps inculcate other personality traits such as
street smartness, Communication skills, spoken English etc. A lot of option is
available to the students to choose subjects from four categories viz Skills,
Hobby, Health and International Languages.
The institute is also working on
introducing more flexibility to choose the subjects in coming years.
I wish that all the students will
enjoy the system developed by the institute and therefore we have named it the Joyful
learning Model. I wish all my students a Joyful learning and good luck
in their academic endeavors.
